I have a black hooded sweatshirt that I wear when it is cold out. Recently, whenever I go to the drug store near me, someone comes out of nowhere and tells me to I “need” to “take the hood off.” I’ve concluded that he works there or he wouldn’t be there so often, but I’m not sure who he is or why he would care if I’m wearing a hood, which, in the purposes of this store, is mainly so I can pull it forward and block some of the god awful bright lights that store has (I also find the added weight on my head comforting). I do comply with him, but no one else has said anything to me; however, I have never lived in an urban area before so perhaps the culture is different.

Do some people feel that wearing a hood is disrespectful? Will he tell me to take my hat off if I wear a hat during the summer to keep from getting heat stroke? Are people not supposed to wear the hoods to hooded sweatshirts- and if they aren’t, why are the hoods there? I really don’t get this, but the man goes as far as to say that I “need” to take it off like it’s not even a preference or a request.

I’m kind of clueless as to how clothing and such is perceived, so I mainly am really just trying to figure out what I’m missing rather than complaining and such. I’m open to there being a good reason for this. I did get sunglasses to help with the lights (from the same drug store)- I hope he doesn’t tell me to take THOSE off.

Oh, addendum:
I am sort of sensitive to bright lights. That’s a simplification, but it’s a good enough explanation for this question.
For that matter, just go ahead and tell me what situations wearing sunglasses would upset people, as well. I’ve never worn them before so that’s another thing I don’t know.
